Hence, soon or later we were keen on some free climbs. The solution was a generator (which I normally used for lamps to collect insects at night), a drilling machine, hooks from STUBAI AUSTRIA, which we got for a super-discount and UPAT
chemical anchor capsules from the company TROGER & BACHER.
Repelling at one of the higher walls: 'Rotbartl', 60m.
Wonderful walls of compact grown chalk stone, discovered in the 'Wadi Manshura', Anti-Lebanon Mountains, on an entomological excursion during my second UN-tour in Syria.
Nobody around there, just me -  and the rocks.
And from time to time kind nomads, inviting for a chai.
A very special rock between rocks, cut into two parts as if God judged... Kain (west) & Abel (east).
Funny formations. Martin trying the 'Waschrumpel'
My fifth UN-tour, but the second one on Golan Highs - a land of stones. Not far, approx. 40 kilometres North, Wadi Manshura in the Anti Lebanon Mountains. The only difference: Chalk instead of vulcanic stone ... and peace.
This unique place hopefully never will be overrun by snap-happy-day climbers. Nevertheless, it shall not be kept as  a secret - I believe that climbers are responsible.

The way up...
from far away it seemed to be easy - but finally we had to experience some skills in lasso-throwing... the head of the 'bloody chicken' (looks like a chicken and you get bloody fingers) was just perfect to get us there...

... my favourite tour 'One Hook' on Abel, a 5+, which initially we could climb top-rope only, since the stone was too compact to hammer conventional hooks

Climbing in Syria
2000 - 2001
Wadi Manshura, Anti-Lebanon Mountains
So, we started drilling ... Also Rene, our Austrian Special Forces (Jagdkommando) elite-man joined us drilling ...

... I myself became a real drilling expert ...         -->
... and Wolfi was drilling - (when he was not smoking) ...               -->
Soon our first tour was ready - the same tour, which we had to do unsecured ... there was no other way to get on top of Kain ... although it was 'only' 4+, we called it 'Adrenaline'...
Some routes were still too difficult
for classic climbing - Wolfi's
'Fingerbrecher', on the West Wall of
Kain. 7+, toprope.
My second favourite wall, the 'Compromise', right hand side, when driving up the valley.
